Short version: price only weakly predicts a ski's test score. There is a small step up on average, but the ranges overlap a lot. Read the test for the ski you're eyeing, not just the price tag.

Price only weakly predicts the score. The Pearson correlation is 0.22, and the rank-based Spearman correlation is 0.06. (Both run from -1 to 1; 0 means no relationship.) Men's skis alone give 0.17 and women's alone 0.24.

There is a small lift on average. Splitting the skis into equal thirds by price, the mean GearLab overall score rises from 4.13 to 4.28 to 4.37 on a 5-point scale. That is a 0.24-point gap, with wide overlap: the top price tier includes skis scoring 3.8 and 4.8. The thirds are our own cut, not an industry definition.

Four skis tied for the top score of 4.8, at list prices of $800 to $930. At the top of the price range, the three skis over $1,000 scored 4.4, 4.5 and 4.7.

What to do with it
